Spring has arrived—the most powerful time of the year. As the sun sheds approximately equal light to darkness upon the earth, so do seeds awaken and burst through the soil. It is absolutely necessary that you strap yourself in for the ride, metal support frames around a beanstalk that is shooting up from the ground. Planetary energies of action, ambition, and structure are exactly conjoined, and the moon, though difficultly in the sign of Scorpio, gives wisdom that you must release all that is not necessary so you may launch your journey to the mountaintop.  

Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: You are the most blessed with the driving energy embodied by early spring. However, fire isn’t the only element in your arsenal, and the heavens ask that you look to the beauty of relating on earth’s time rather than fire roiling across a pile of dry wood.

Using Language Towards Symbolic and Creative Ends

We’ve been gifted with new images and understandings of the planet Jupiter courtesy of the Juno Spacecraft. When I first heard that Juno would be exploring Jupiter a few years back, my mind immediately jumped to the symbolic interpretation of the words and deities, Juno and Jupiter, rather than the literal planet and spacecraft or the astrological placements of those planetary bodies. I thought it so fitting that Queen Juno, the planet and goddess of marriage and childbirth, restrictive and ruling in those domains, should seek to know and better understand her expansive and thunderous husband, Jupiter.

Words don’t simply have meanings, they create, through context, usage, tone, and style. Discursive and creative use of language, while inaccurate literally and licentious astrologically can lead to deeper truths than one might have gleaned merely by sticking to surface interpretations. So go ahead—the next time you want to use words as symbols and signs rather than their conventional meanings, pioneer a new Jupiterian path onwards and upwards!

How are you to best harness this energy? Different faith traditions have different answers. Judaism instructs you to “Pass Over” the turbulence by creating the order of a Seder. Christianity celebrates the death and resurrection of the season in the form of the cruxifiction and resurrection. And Chinese philosophy would have you undergo an acupuncture treatment to harness the extreme energy of turning into spring. It is best to turn inward and explore your own nature, yes nature, and decide what is best for your self as you break into the beginning of nature, and the stars’, new year.

Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: This is an extraordinarily powerful week for you. Make sure that even though you are sure to burst into your full being that you remain stoically within yourself and aware of how your surging actions effect those around you.

Last week was about spiritual longings, but this week, you arrive. The sun takes on the spirit of Pisces, the fish. This is the most magical, transformative time of year, where Jesus turns his men into fishers and water into wine. Purim is celebrated, and Dionysus reigns supreme. The moon cloaks herself in hard driving Aries, possessive and pleasurable Taurus, and giddy, sunny Gemini, an ascent towards the sun culminating of the brightest days. But be forewarned—too much of a good thing is not always wonderful, and decadence quickly turns to madness and dissolution. Make sure to keep a modicum of dramatic, stately, composure as you ascend to the most beautiful, mystical heights.

This week you are set to experience deep, spiritual longings, as Venus has cloaked herself in the mystical waters of Pisces. But dreams are not reality, not yet. Dreams take time to leap from spirit, to the mind, and then into matter. You may taste the sweetness of your future, if you open yourself to her, but must realize that actualizing your visions takes some commitment and dedication. Let your fantasies foment, but realize they will not happen as of yet. Savor the fake intoxication, as it feels real, and if you allow it, very soon will be. Specifically, this week features a special new moon, solar eclipse when the moon blockades the space between the sun and the earth, further emphasizing spiritual and creative nurturance. With all of the magic around the corner, keep your wits about you, and be careful what you wish for, as the new moon is prime time for such activities.

Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: Your tendency is to charge head first, but there’s a subtle opening for you to hold back. Your pain is telling you the answers to the problems you seek to abate, but your usual motion is to aggressively move, sometimes in vain.

You’re probably still reeling from last week’s historic, super, blue, blood, eclipse, and every other adjective available, moon. While your week starts off somewhat comfortably, reaping and assimilating the gains of last week’s dramatic full moon, there is a tendency for a crisis of consciousness to emerge as the week progresses and with it, a necessary call for temperance amongst fire and tempestuous waters. Focus on and carry forth only what is absolutely necessary, and let your dead leaves fall back into the loving earth so you may rise from the ashes.

Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: The application of power is greater than power itself. Look for new and novel ways to harness your athletic, aggressive nature and find greater success than simply charging at the word “go.”

Taurus, Born 4/20-5/20: The future is hard on your mind right now, especially with regard to career and public recognition. Though you possess the great materials of the earth and zodiac, you’re going to have to make some judgments about what needs to stay and what needs to go if you want to move towards that future which is much more readily attainable than you think.

Gemini, Born 5/21-6/20: There’s a lot of air in this week’s lunations. Enjoy it, as it is your natural domain, but make sure not to lose yourself in your flighty machinations.

This week is the dramatic culmination 2018 thus far, whereby midweek you experience the arrival of a rare blue/blood red super moon eclipse. What does that mean? This lunar eclipse in the regal, august sign of the lion, Leo, is when the sun eclipses the moon but in fact ends up shedding more light on the moon, allowing you to deeply experience, feel, and reflect upon where you are at that moment. The key to this full moon is its appearance before and after its culmination, in the signs of Cancer and Virgo, asking you to hold onto what you need, lovingly, while separating from what is unnecessary, the wheat from the chaff, as you roar ahead into 2018, your glorious journey towards your future vision. This week I will be hosting a recap of my initial Tea Witch Astrology Workshop, covering the basics of astrology and also a second session covering lesser discussed components of your chart including asteroids, centaurs, and calculated parts, often times the keys to deep change, understanding, and transformation. Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: There’s a lot of emphasis on your career and social networks right now. That’s good, but remember home is where your heart is. You are the masthead of your ship, but make sure you have a steady place to dock.

Taurus, Born 4/20-5/20: Usually less concerned with the esoteric and spiritual dimensions of your life (why should you be? you possess all of the materials of the earth), focus on your background feelings this week as they are the key to the subterranean river that feeds your roots.

Gemini, Born 5/21-6/20: There’s a lot of emphasis on your higher self—learning , spirituality and all, and your future, especially on a deep, carnal level—that to which you’re passionately drawn. However, rather than solely flying with those impulses, take stock of what you value and hold onto those things for dear life.

Cancer, Born 6/21-7/22: There’s no way around it—you’re really feeling it this week as the moon, your embodiment, moves through your sign and breaks into the lion, Leo, and then into Virgo, the virgin. Hang on for the ride, and hold on, as you will, as you float to your next destination.

Leo, Born 7/23-8/22: You’ll be tempted to roar from the mountain tops, and you will, but remember the lion does best from an august, grounded stance that simply asserts dominance rather than over impresses. Keep your paws on the ground.

Virgo, Born 8/23-9/22: This is a great week for you, Virgo, as you are able to reap the wisdom of the waning moon through your sign. Make sure you enjoy the climax as well, as solely focusing on your collecting and organizing duties will have you missing out on some much needed fun.

Libra, Born 9/23-10/22: Ever the one to fuss about how you’re perceived by others, necessarily, a little schadenfreude won’t hurt your cause especially by causing some necessary trouble around you to make the changes you need emotionally, in your career, and in social networks.

Scorpio, Born 10/23-11/21: This is a beautifully powerful week for you, Scorpio, as long as you don’t make the hard changes you feel necessary. You’re so good at being the undertaker, but this week, shift into a lower gear and let simmer and stew the changes you feel need to happen. Think the turning of a screw rather than imploding a building.

Sagittarius, Born 11/22-12/21: You’re really moving ahead, as the planet of action and war, Mars, just moved into your sign. However, remember that perpetual, forward motion isn’t always preferable. You can shoot your arrows from a static place as well and harness different modes of movement to achieve your goals and aims.

Capricorn, Born 12/22-1/19: You’re valuing the future more so than usual, but the key to the future is harnessing the moment in all its radiant glory especially by honoring the best partnerships around you.

This week, in a rare synchronicity, the sun’s character, having just shifted to the futuristic sign of Aquarius, matches the moon’s message, a waxing crescent that is struggling to break with the old to make way for the new. Specifically, you are beginning to feel and see the length of days expand from the darkest of the year to greater sunlight shed. This is all good news, but remember, though you feel aggressively jubilant about your prospects, and you should, where you want to be is not where you are now. You will have your personal revolution this spring, but for the moment, hold steady.  

Aries, Born 3/21-4/19: You’re really feeling the fire this week, Aries, as the moon is shifting through you and your sign. Remember that even though you are the masthead of the zodiac, a rugged individual who leads all others, enlisting the cooperation of others, especially those whom you find beautiful and diplomatic, will help you actualize the fire in your belly.

This week is really the beginning of 2018. After coming down from the massive Super Moon at the beginning of this year, this new moon in the serious sign of Capricorn, along with five other planetary bodies, signals a year of structure-seeking, slow, and steady success. Down the street from me, there is a Vietnamese Lunar New Year’s celebration happening, ringing in the year of the Dog. The Dog is quite different from the Goat, less serious and more fun-loving, and that is the Dog’s fall in Vietnamese folklore. But the combination of the two will yield massive success for you in 2018, a care free attitude combined with sober planning, execution, and discipline. Today is also the birthday of Martin Luther King, the greatest leader to come from the United States. I was fortunate enough to hear Coretta Scott King speak at my alma mater, New England Conservatory, as I played for the commencement ceremonies my junior year. She spoke of her courtship with her husband, feeling blessed that they were called to Montgomery, Alabama, to protest in the bus boycott, and hoped that speaking at New England Conservatory would inspire her to get back into singing. She was a beautiful, self-possessed, earthly Taurus, the best manifestation of that sign and spirit, and her husband, Martin Luther King, was Capricorn, the greatest expression of ambition and success.  

Aries: 2018 could shape up to be a huge year for your career, but you must pace yourself. Place reasonable checks on your hard-driving nature, and the stars will take care of the rest.

Taurus: 2018 can be the year where you rise above the pleasures of the earth which you hold so dear. The roots that hold you in place have the ability to transport you to the heavens, and other realms of travel and knowing, if you’d only climb the beanstalk.

Gemini: 2018 will be the year where you dive into the deep, dark recesses of your soul, and make great gains. Integrating and placing structure around the rejected parts of your psyche, not your preferred domain, will prevent you from flying too high in the sky and being burned by the sun.

Cancer: 2018 will put an inordinate amount of emphasis on other individuals, relationships, and partnerships of all kinds. But remember who you are, Cancer, and never forget that love and home are the domains where you triumph.

Leo: 2018 will be the year where you put your warmth and creativity to work for you, but not without some balancing and adjusting. You succeed when you nurture yourself, the sculptor and objet d’art, working in tandem, a singular act of love and creation.

Virgo: 2018 is the year where you can truly do what you love and love what you do. Work and service are your hallmarks, but they won’t be mutually exclusive from what you love doing, and in turn, your own personal success.

Libra: 2018 will be the year of your family and home base. You’re so used to juggling and judging that which the universe throws at you that you lose the anchor of your home. No matter, as you’ll have it this year, as long as you make the necessary judgments with regard to people, places, and things that don’t nurture your home base.

Scorpio: 2018 will be the year of communication, short trips, and siblings. These aren’t necessarily the natural fields in which you play, but place some structure around these areas in your life and see how a little light-hearted, playful communication can lift you up.

Sagittarius: 2018 can be a great year for you, if you harness your fire. Remember, Apollo drove Helios’ sun, and the next sign over, Capricorn, asks you to put the reigns on your exuberance and optimism. Cautious optimism is always better than unbridled optimism.

Capricorn: 2018 and the next several years really are your years with so much planetary activity in your sign. Appreciate and be grateful for the gifts, but don’t let it get to your head, as your ambitious, success-seeking nature can do.

Aquarius: 2018 will be a year, ironically, about the past. Dredging up past karma and shedding light on the unconscious motivations that drive your present will lead you to the future visions you hold so dear.

This week is destined to be anticlimactic as the moon is coming down from her massive, full, super culmination, the largest of the year. Yet that doesn’t mean this week will be uneventful, as the moon suggests you revisit, through a potential crisis of consciousness midweek, that which needs to be shed in order to make room for a fresh start in the form of the new moon next week. Then you will really get looking to your future, and your north star.

Aries: Not necessarily known for your ability to make dramatic change, invest in that type of energy this week, and dispense with everything that is uncritical. Your proverbial masthead can’t afford the extra weight.

Taurus: Content to let the seekers come your way by evidence of your enviable largesse, you’ll want to reevaluate the relationships in your life this week, and make necessary adjustments by dispensing with the bottom feeders.

Gemini: Even though this could be a treacherous week for you regarding your love life and creative world, your crisis is actually your wrong turn gone right. You’ll be surprised by the partnerships that can emerge if you just get out of your head a bit and open up to them.

Cancer: Though holding on is your MO, you're going to want to make some hard changes, especially in the realm of your family life. This opens you up to the creative space in which you’ve been wanting to relish.

Wow! This moon phase is a powerful way to start off 2018 with the moon waxing full, the largest Supermoon of the year. Is this a time to make grand pronouncements, set goals, and make resolutions for yourself? No. While there is so much energy towards ambition, success, and climbing to the top of your proverbial mountain, take a moment to feel what has transpired over the past year, and understand what you need to do to protect yourself, while moving forward, as you climb into 2018. The moon, in the nurturant, spiritual, emotive sign of Cancer demands that you do as much or the crab goddess will hold you back.

Aries: Ever the virile Ram, the moon brings to full awareness your need to ground yourself with your home base. This doesn’t mean that you will stop pushing ahead, but you will realize that without a home base you won’t be able to get to where you’re headed.

Taurus: Your feelings have much to tell you, even if they seem distant from the material realm in which you inhabit and are gifted. Your feelings are just as valuable as all of your possessions, so take some time to put into words that which you are feeling.

Gemini: You’re used to living in your head, your thinking, and your enviable communicative abilities, but be reminded that great communication is the merging of mind and emotions. Virgo: You are so smart, heady, and analytical, Virgo, that you forget your feelings and intuition can aid you, at times more than your mind. This is especially true in the area of larger social networks and friends. Feel more in 2018 and you’ll realize that the union of your formidable mind and intuition will take you far.

Libra: So used to relating and judging the gifts that come before you, you are feeling you haven’t protected your own career and success. Listen to the moon, your feelings, and spirit, and protect your beautiful self and career, and remember, you are ruled by Venus, not the objects, materials, and ideas that come to you.

Scorpio: Your feelings, as they govern your power, are amongst the most intense of the zodiac. But it is the “application of power” as Arthur C. Clarke once wrote in Childhood’s End that matters. Honor your feelings, utilize them, but be careful not to act on the most daemonic ones, as you, the scorpion, should only sting, rarely, in order to survive. Adopting this mentality brings you to a new spiritual level and takes you far.

Sagittarius: Used to gallantly riding ahead, your darkest, hidden feelings scream out to be heard. Make sure you listen, as they are the key to your arrows hitting their marks.

Capricorn: There is so much planetary action in your sign right now, that you are tempted to jump full speed into 2018 with grand designs for your ascent. But remember you must tend to yourself and nurture your spirit, especially in the form of partners who can help, or your climb will not be worth it in the end.

Aquarius: Your grand visions are emerging right now, filled with the tension between these futuristic thoughts and primal feelings. Allow that tension to bring your visions to bear, mysterious as it is, and you won’t need to be so hard headed about enacting your great plans that benefit us all.

Pisces: It’s your nature to feel and believe, and that you will, but put some hard thought to those impulses and actualize them in the material realm. You’ll be shocked at how, in 2018, that the dream world in which you inhabit becomes an external reality.

This week, a new child is born, as the moon shifts from Pisces, the fish, into Aries, the head strong ram, and finally situates in Taurus, the great sitting bull and earth mother. The soupy, magical, primordial world of Pisces, now occupied by the dreamy and barbarous planet Neptune and painful Chiron, the wounded healer, pleads for you to accept your hidden troubles and imperfections as they break to the surface in a new birth. Realize that that which is forged in rejection, darkness, and dismay is actually your source of triumph and redemption, if you’d only take the time to accept the difficult message that is being delivered.

Aries: This is a very emotional week for you. Your normal mode of operation is to charge ahead, but stay situated in what is driving you, take some extra time to saddle up in your endeavors, and avoid jumping head first into conflicts. If you adopt this approach, you are better able to sustain your material self, money, possessions, and values alike.

Taurus: This could be a great week for you, if you pay attention to some of the pain points throughout your larger social networks and group memberships. With a new birth, you are cast into the new, with the spirit of the old, but find a way to healthfully integrate that which you’ll carry forth into the future, good and bad, while letting go of that which has passed, a difficult task for you, possessive Taurus.

Gemini: There is potential for you to break in a new career direction this week, but only if you sit with some of the pain that has been ailing you in your work life. Usually you prefer to fly at light speed with your ideas, but take some time to feel the new dreams your soul is forging in the water of your dreams, the realm of your unknown.

Cancer: This is a positively revelatory week for you, even though you are already an already emotive, intuitive sign. Be open to the new spiritual dimensions to which you are awakening which can lead to new knowledge and even travel, and hold on, with the claws of your crab, for the ride!

Leo: Used to basking in the romantic radiance of the sun, you are especially asked to take a look at how the shadow you cast, lion, can actually be the source of your greatest triumph, especially as it relates to the darker side of sexuality, money, and other people. A new birth can happen for you, even if you are content in your fixed radiance, but nothing is forever, and even you must transform.

Virgo: Oh, poor Virgo, you always end up carrying the burden. Won’t you look at the pains that plague you, written in your dreams, push you into a new direction, one where you are not a slave to others and your work, but where you serve with dignity and joy?

Libra: You excel in the airy realms of thought and art, but realize that great inspiration comes from the unknown. Allow yourself to approach your thinking and creating from a more esoteric, intuitive place, and be amazed what comes before your scales, a new surplus to judge.

Scorpio: The most intense energy of the zodiac, you are fused with even more creative energy this week. Make sure to come to the surface for air because too much water will drown you.

Sagittarius: Ever the seeker, lick the wounds from your battles this week, and tend to your home. Even the strong, expansive archer must halt every so often.

Capricorn: Usually more grounded in your thought and communication, take a walk on the wild side, and pay attention to your body, heart, and mind, and what your spirit has to tell you through the unknown realm of dreams. Don’t even worry about how it will all shake out. You’ll find the necessary structure to put your feelings into action.

Aquarius: The most knowledgeable of all the signs, take some time this week to feel through what you don’t know. Your dreams are actually the source of new knowledge, even if they don’t have the hard, electrical precision of how you like them to be.

Pisces: The moon is moving through your sign this week. Though you like to live in the water, this week you break into hard form, a seed that bursts from the earth, and ultimately settles into place. There is no stopping this compulsive action, but do take a moment to think, rather than dream or feel, of the journey you are on.

This week, the moon highlights the signs of Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius from the position of an invisible, fresh-start, black new moon that begins to wax. There are a whopping five planets in Sagittarius and the usually optimistic, searching sign takes on a downright futuristic quality. Yet the great centaur needs time for his archer to mount and combine into one self, as the centaur is half human, half horse. You also need to gain the momentum to adjudicate a rolling gallop. That is the name of the game for you this week---sowing the seeds of your future while putting the reigns on your expansive energy so that you may truly ride.

Aries: Your usual modality is to move head first into any situation, but take a different direction, and plow your field, plant your seeds, and then go about casting your ship off the shore. When you return from your trip, see how your garden has grown.  

Taurus: Dip deep---that’s where you need to plant some new seeds. Though you're used to possessing the greatest, most fecund materials of the earth, going deeper into the soil, and planting some new seeds, will yield you even greater vegetables and flowers than you’re used to.

Gemini: Start exploring some new relationships and partnerships this week, or re-up with some old ones. Even though there are veritable children chattering in your mind, establishing new rapport with others will help your endless stream of ideas come to reality.

Cancer: Though you excel at riding the moon’s cycle, intentionally dig your claws around the nitty gritty aspects of your work, daily routine, and health. You can ride the moon’s waves, but you don’t always have to.

Leo: Just showing up, you are the romantic, creative life of any situation, but this week, really think about what you want to do with your creative and romantic energies and follow that golden thread as your create it in time.

Virgo: You’re probably already doing this, but start paying closer attention to what can make your home life better. It doesn’t have to happen overnight, as you may like, but make your list, and instead of obsessing over it, let your home grow the way you want it to, over time.

Libra: The moon is the original goddess of communication, and she is activating this part of your chart during her new, black phase. Feel what you want to say instead of fretting over the perceived beauty and balance of what you’re trying to say. Let your emotions guide you, especially with regard to how you want things to go moving forward. Feel empowered to communicate these impulses.

Scorpio: Being so used to having to make the cold, harsh, yet deep, calculations that life, and others, requires of you, turn the tables and think about what it is that you truly value, and see the seeds of those impulses grow, rather than perpetually playing the (necessary) role of undertaker.

Sagittarius: This is a powerful moon cycle for you, Sagittarius. You are tempted to ride off into the sunset, but, as I wrote at the beginning of this column, take the necessary time to gain your momentum so you may then truly fly.

Capricorn: Pay attention to your dreams this week, and mine them for inspiration as to how you can flower. Structure, though necessary, has its limitations, and lest we forget the great powerful, destroyer, Pluto, has been in your sign for some time. Letting things fall apart and holding onto those parts is just what you need for a fresh start.

Aquarius: This is a great week for you, as long as you get out and about. There are no limits for you this week, as long as you feel the joys of the season that is very social. Make sure to leave your hard-headedness and know-it-all attitude at home, even if you are usually the one who is right.

Pisces: Used to going with the flow, and often falling apart as a result, see how you can feel some strength in your thighs, as Sagittarius rules the thighs, and really dig into some powerful, riding action that can propel you forward, rather than your usual mode of swimming along.

This week the moon suggests y’all review and reject that which is already gone, as she is waning towards a dark, new, reborn self. You can only make room for that which is new by clearing the dead and allowing those seeds to fall back into the earth to grow again. By making these critical judgments that have come before you, and making hard, necessary choices, you may move on, and rise anew.

Aries: The moon is highlighting your relations, those that are transactional partnerships, and those to which you are carnally drawn. Be careful, fiery Aries, because where you invest your libido is ultimately the high lesson you will learn. Make sure you’re signing up for the class you truly want to take.

Taurus: The moon asks you to reevaluate the details of your work life. While the pleasures and material gifts of the world flow easily to you, search your feelings for those partners who can help you manage your largesse, and analyze the humdrum details you wish to forget about.

Gemini: The moon really wants you to seek balance and make some judgments with regard to your creativity, romantic life, and the possibility of having children. Though your thoughts run free and wild, balancing the practical details will in actuality give you the freedom in your love and creative life that you truly want.  

Cancer: There’s a special place in the moon’s heart for you, Cancer, and this week, you do best to enjoy your family-oriented, loving, emotive nature, as the moon highlights those parts of your self.

Leo: The moon suggests you focus on putting your warm feelings into crystalline words and communication. You’re so used to being a warm romantic that you forget to communicate how you feel.

Virgo: The moon asks you to consider how you feel about the material and familial aspects of your life. Are you happy with your family? Are you happy with your home? Release your burdens and take ownership of that which is rightfully yours.

Libra: The moon situates her energy squarely on yourself, demanding that you take a hard look in the mirror and release the aspects of yourself that you know aren’t serving you, just as you make judgments, as you are the scales, towards the people, things, and situations who come before you.

Scorpio: The moon asks you to take a step back and reevaluate that which you value, instead of assessing what it might actually be worth. Focus on the areas that matter to you, such as home, family, and siblings, as family relationships don’t fit neatly into your economic equation of worth. You won’t have a problem of dispensing with what isn’t working, and rediscovering that which you love and value.

Sagittarius: The moon will surprise you with feelings of the unknown, the precise domain in which you feel uncomfortable, as you are the learned archer. Let her communicate these dreams to you, and then integrate them into yourself, discovering newfound, invaluable knowledge that you didn’t even have to search for.

Capricorn: To get to the top, which is your perennial goal, you have to pace yourself. Luckily, the feelings of wanting and needing to hold back, find balance, and make critical judgments are reflected in your inner emotional world this week. Go with your feelings, not the structures you’ve so rigidly constructed that shield you from your emotions.

Aquarius: Yes, you probably are the most knowledgable, especially about the future, but even you, Aquarius, need to learn something new. Expand your horizons even beyond what you see the future to be, from the impulses that come within that then become reality. THAT’S where it’s really at for you.

Pisces: You love to live in your colorful dream world, but work to seek balance in those realms this week. You can bring that world out into the open, integrate it into some kind of knowledge, and turn it into your success and career. This is your path forward, as divined by the moon, Pisces.

Is It Mercury Retrograde?

Is it Mercury Retrograde? This is one of the most googled questions in the state of New York, and not surprisingly. Aside from knowing your sun sign, you are probably at least familiar with the term, “Mercury Retrograde.” However, there is more to Mercury Retrograde than the perennial claims of communication and technology mishaps that are the hallmarks of this most infamous astrological cycle.

Mercury, the planet and character, is Hermes in Greek mythology, the messenger of the gods. Hermes is the original trickster, before Uranus took that title as the higher octave of Mercury, but Hermes played a critical role in antiquity, one that you can learn from by observing and following the cycles of the modern Mercury. Hermes flies between worlds, patronizing mortals, roads, and travelers, serving as a bridge between men and gods. While Mercury gets a bad rap as stealing time, he actually was the original Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to you. However, there’s a catch. You have to follow his lead.

Today, Mercury will appear to slow down in the sky, station retrograde, and then move backwards, entering its retrograde phase. What you generally do is continue on the daily pace of your normal life instead of following Mercury’s lead, which is to slow down, and then move backwards over the material you’ve covered in the last several weeks.

When Mercury slows down, you slow down too. If you don’t it's like continuing on at fifty miles per hour when a car is grinding to a halt. When Mercury is stationed retrograde, a beacon in the sky, stop and watch your thoughts as they fly by, but don’t move with them, as Mercury wants you to dock. Then when Mercury moves backwards, don’t move forwards, rather, be mindful of what has passed, as you are moving backwards.

It is helpful to note that Mercury Retrograde is occurring during the crazy month of December, so slowing down to counterbalance the madness is much recommended, regardless. Interestingly, Mercury is coupling with Saturn, in Greek mythology, Kronos, the conservative God of Time and Fate, further demanding you slow down, stop, or explore a different pace. Beware, Mars, originally Ares, the God of War, enters into the dark sign of Scorpio on December 10th, releasing his pent-up energies that have been kept in check in his opposite sign of balance, Libra, so be forewarned, failure to slow down and readjust may have negative unintended consequences. To better handle the holiday, and Mercury, madness, see what’s in store for your sign below.

Aries: Mercury is asking you to slow down and imagine how you might reconstruct a path forward for yourself that involves higher learning, longer travel, and seeking spiritual depth. There are more modes of expansion than arming the helm of your powerful ship.

Taurus: Mercury asks you to reevaluate yourself in relation to others, their money, and even the darker realms of your intuition and sexuality. All the gifts of the earth can’t and don’t always come from you, and you must look outside yourself.

Gemini: Mercury is your ruler, and you’ll probably hate that going retrograde puts a halt to your flighty mind. But this is good, as getting outside of your head will give you the opportunity to explore partnerships of all kinds, including business and romantic. It can’t all be in your head.

Cancer: Mercury asks you to think a little bit more and feel less, especially as it relates to the nitty gritty aspects of your work and health. While your intuition is unrivaled, you need your head in the game when it comes to reevaluating your work life and health.

Leo: This is a tricky Mercury Retrograde for you, as Mercury is retrograding through your preferred fifth house of expression, love, creativity, and children. Instead of being the Don Juan of the season, think with your head while you’re out and gallivanting.

Virgo: Already a heady sign, Mercury retrogrades through your sector of family and home, so some past feelings about family members may uncomfortably arise. It’s best to calmly analyze, something you're good at, and forge a path forward, remembering your own home and family are what’s most important.

Libra: Though you value justice, judgment, balance above all else, Mercury asks you to rethink how you express your values through communication. Also, reevaluate your interactions with siblings, as how you communicate with siblings in often a reflection of how you communicate in other parts of your life.

Scorpio: Even though you are arguably the deepest, most powerful and intuitive sign with your finger on the pulse of other people’s motives and money, Mercury asks you to use your head instead of your instinctual faculties with regard to reevaluate your own finances, materials, and those things which you hold most dear in life.

Sagittarius: Pardon the pun, but Mercury retrograding through you is tricky. You are the sign of luck, belief, and knowledge, but Mercury is asking you to lighten the load this holiday season, a difficult task for such an expansive sign. Try to connect with your introverted, inner child, as a retrograding Mercury can aid in this task. It doesn’t all have to be about conquering the world and exploring new horizons.

Capricorn: Oddly, Mercury retrograde can suit you quite well, as you like things at a slower, retrograding pace, but Mercury can wreak havoc for you as old Hermes retrogrades through your sector of dreams, unconscious, and secrets. Mercury asks that you get outside of your structured self and let some magic happen.

Aquarius: The bold, eccentric visionary, you’re never happy with a retrograding pace. But Mercury moving backwards through you sector of friends, organizations, and wishes is just what you need, to see the value in and reinvigorate your social networks to bring your visions to larger groups.

Pisces: Mercury asks you to come down to earth for the moment and reconsider the direction of your career. Reevaluate what you’ve done in the past, brush up your resume, and then you can make the change you’ve been so desperately seeking.
